I am a US Citizen, born and raised here, and I always thought a passport was for people not from the US to show they can legally be here. But I am doing something and they want me to provide my US passport, or docs showing I am getting one. That doesnt make sence to me. US citizens can get US passports?

technically you are right but it is really good to have a passport if you travel a lot because it is the easiest form of identity to have with you.

No, starting this January, 2008, Passports are required to enter or leave the US.

Update: June 2009 it will be required for everything.
