i would sell the older SCSI machine to help fund the 6 drives for the Xeon server

I had thought that as well. But I have PCI slots open for a SATA controller so I'll use Ultra3 for the OS and some software I need to run and then use 3 of the slots for a SATA setup (I only need around 2tb total)

Also, as of right now the google appliance isn't working. I need to figure out what is wrong with it. I really don't need processing power though, just a good place to hold my stuff.

we use DT search with spyder for internal stuff, no google appliance necessary. WOOT for you though.

I loaded Windows 2000 last night and all I had to do was type in the key code and it auto installed everything else (even all the drivers)

wait... what do you mean you think it's a "google server"... as far as i know, google uses a custom linux OS, desktop class machines in a clustered configuration. But i head this a couple years back, so I could be wrong

No, you are correct. For the google search engine they use off the shelf computers using a very customized linux (around 80,000 servers).

This is a side project they did. This box is designed to do searches on an intranet. You could buy these for around 25,000 (most of the cost was in the software) to do very quick searches on your internal network (I believe this one could do 300,000 indexes and 25 requests a second)
