Upgrade from my Kenwood KDC-MP522

What would be a good hu to upgrade to? I want a very clean signal (heard eclipse is great) and don't want to spend too much. For $200-$250 what could I get? I'm getting into the SQ thing and want great sound. BTW, do I need to get any special kind of amp with the eclipse hu's that have 8v preouts? Just curious. Also, where to get the head unit you suggest? I'm not too interested in how pretty it looks, just want it to be nice. Those animated displays mean nothing to me. Function is the big thing. I also don't know what to do with all the features some head units have.....or why i would need them. I'm open for all opinions and am really interested in the eclipse brand. Thanks for lookin!
