Update on Kyle Hicks

My best wishes for Kyle and his family. Its a sad state of affairs when doctors and drug companies make huge profits, but refuse to donate any time/money to help such critical situations. Its reminiscent of the CEO's of the banks who took our billions of tax dollars to stay in business, and then still 'earned' their amazingly high bonuses. Society, its fucked up.

Yes it is. The Ironic part is Doctors are supposed to be a nobel trade. I don't see the justifiction of working 3 days a week in your private practice and making $500k+, Or recouping research costs in the first year to go on to show record gains and profits off of medicine that if lowered in price could help a much greater section of the global population. I'm not talking socialistic meds, rather free market with a conscience.

Just received a new email yesterday about Kyle's condition. I wanted to share it with this community since we came together to make a little donation for this young mans cause.

Dear Friends,We have wonderful news to share. Kyle Hicks WILL receive his bone marrow

transplant!

He reports to the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis on April 25th for a

period of testing. The target date for hospital check in is May 6th and the

transplant should take place ten days after that. He will be in Minnesota for

about four months. This has all come together rather quickly and Kyle is

excited and nervous at the same time.

There has been a long hiatus since active fundraising has taken place. When

the estimated cost of the transplant rose to over $1 million, the situation did

not look promising. Good things come to those who wait! About six months ago

following the publishing of the clinical trials test results, Kyle’s insurance

company notified him they would be reconsidering his request for a bone marrow

transplant. Soon they told Kyle they would cover it. He and his parents then

met with Dr. Wagner again and an estimated time frame was developed. They would

wait for a new hospital wing to open and the donor (a perfect match male in his

20’s) had to be tested and make HIS plans. It was just last week when Kyle

finally received a final “GO” and solid date for transplant!

We would like to thank everyone for all the many things you have done to help

Kyle reach this goal. Your work planning fundraisers, assisting with them,

digging in your own pockets, all the while giving Kyle such wonderful moral

support, has been vital to the process. Without the COTA funds you’ve raised -

an amazing $378,000 - the family would not be able to afford their portion of

the expenses associated with the transplant. The treatment would simply not

happen. Words cannot begin to express how much gratitude and appreciation we

feel.

It’s an emotional, exciting time for Kyle! We wanted you to hear this good

news from us first! Again, we thank you for your outpouring of love and concern

for Kyle and his family. Without you, Kyle would not be able to fulfill his

dream of a bone marrow transplant. Please continue to keep Kyle in your

thoughts and prayers as he goes through this life changing procedure.

Many heartfelt thanks!

Kyle Hicks and family
Everyone that helped out by donating their time, products, cash, etc... We did one hell of a job! Kyle has lived 20 years of his life with a disease that does NOT allow him to be a normal kid. Hopefully that will all change soon!

Here is also a little link to the local paper with a small article...

Kyle Hicks to finally get transplant | Wichita Eagle

great to hear Kyle is gonna have his surgery!how selfish can doctors be wanting to charge that much for an op;it's an even worse time in this economy.if they had any heart they would do it for free to save a young man's life.it's not like it would hurt their pockets to be human for once.

Unfortunatly I think alot of the issue with the price has to due with CYA. They want to make enough money that if something goes wrong, they can afford pay the for the lawsuit. The fact that the act of not curing a patient because he can't afford it kind of goes against the Hippocratic Oath. If they have the capability to heal someone they all took a oath to due just that.

"I will remember that I do not treat a fever chart, a cancerous growth, but a sick human being, whose illness may affect the person's family and economic stability. My responsibility includes these related problems, if I am to care adequately for the sick."
