So I am putting together a very basic boat system with what I have in my garage, eBay and Craigslist. Cheap just because of weather/theft possibility and just because it's a seasonal boat.
Everything except some full-range speakers is pretty much set. I'm looking to power four 6 1/2" speakers directly from a Pioneer DEH-150 CD ($55 on eBay). I'll also add a 10" Kenwood sub woofer powered by a Dual amp that I happen to have (don't remember the model/specs on either, but they worked well together in a past car application). Adding a four channel amp for the 6 1/2s later is probable, but not right now. All will mount in compartments that should have decent acoustic qualities; two 6 1/2" plus the sub will firing forward from below a rear bench seat (1/2" plywood structure with upholstery or insulation on several sides), the other two speakers will be in fiberglass trim panels that are heavy, enclosed and look like a natural spot for speakers; firing inward toward front driver and passenger seat area.
I'm not really interested in marine-speciifc speakers, mainly because I don't believe they offer a good sound to value ratio and I don't want the hard plastic grills that come with them. So my target price range for a set of four speakers runs $40-$80. In keeping with this ultra-budget system, I had my eye on a set of four Boss CH6520's for about $43. A set of four Pioneer Pioneer TS-A1675Rs come in about $80, perhaps a couple of bucks less for some Rockford R165X3s. Those are just some random choices. This is also a gittr-done quick project, without much time for research and contemplation. I know that approach is not the smartest (nor is it my normal way of doing things), but summer's here and I need to make it happen pronto. So I would be very grateful for some opinion that would help me decide. Thanks!
