Ugly TC neoz FTW!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neodymium_magnet

"Neodymium magnets are very strong in comparison to their mass, but are also mechanically fragile and the most powerful grades lose their magnetism at temperatures above 176 degrees fahrenheit or 80 degrees Celsius. High-temperature grades will operate at up to 200 and even 230 °C but their strength is only marginally greater than that of samarium-cobalt."

There's trade offs between Neo and your basic Ferrite mags.

Neo comparatively speaking size wise, is one of the strongest magnets known to man. But it also has it's draw backs, it's a bit more rare thus making it slightly more costly. Every magnet has a curie point, that when heated past this, loses some of it's magnetic properties, Neodymium has a much lower curie point than regular ferrite, and since we're talking speakers here 80c probably isn't hard to achieve inside the gap. Also, Neo is extremely fragile, it chips easy, and believe it or not the pieces that have been chipped off neo magnets have been known to pierce skin.

I read a while back from Dan Wiggins (iirc) that neo motors aren't really any more money to build, but that they hadn't been adopted more yet due to heat issues and the simple fact that most people seem to like subs with fat *****.
Ive never run a neo sub, Id be concerned about heat saturation myself. But looks very cool, let us know how it works out (very well I bet).
who doesnt like a fat ***:boink:

i know fat ***** are nice and all but this thing is still crazy... this is the 3rd neo sub ive owned and ive never had heat issues, plus for the price i paid you wont even be able to buy regular TC3000 in a couple of weeks (this motor is 6 times stronger than a regular 3000 motor)... so i really like it for the money i paid, not to mention it weighs like 29 pounds:naughty:

the "heat issue" is the magnet losing strength because of the heat.. I'm not entirely sure that you would "notice" that per se... unless you were on a meter..

well... ive played with the sub inverted quite a bit and have never even had the mag hot... of course, im also running like 300 watts:*******:

but anyways, ive never seen a noticable difference

As far as I know, the magnet can regain its strength after it is allowed to cool properly.
