Alright, before you guys have a little fit, I know the difference. I just really don't know which one to get. I am getting an RL-p 12. I can probably make the room for a ported box, but just don't know what to get. I know that sealed takes up less room, and has better SQ. And ported takes up more room, and better for SPL. I just don't know what kinda box to get. Thanks alot.

Sounds like you've done your homework on this already...the question is, what are you looking for out of your subwoofer? After all, it's not our ears that are going to be listening to this //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Good point. Well I am trying to compare it to my home subwoofer..but that probably isn't a good comparison. It's a Logitech Z-5500. The sub is ported..it does sound kinda "boomy". I am just not sure. I mean if you use a ported enclosure with a sub, and then use the same sub in a sealed enclosure, can you actaully hear a difference? How much of a difference?

you might hear a slight jump in SQ going from ported to sealed, depending on what the ported box was tuned to. ported boxes, if done correctly can still have awesome SQ, and the rl-p is great in ported boxes. It will probably be less boomy if you're sticking with the same power. I like sealed, its all preference.

i'd go ported first, and then sealed if you're unhappy with the peakiness/sq

if you do sealed first, you'll never know what you're missing/ wont be able to make an educated decision

i'm actually going from ported to sealed on my L7's, but i never would have known what i really wanted if i didn't at least have it ported for a bit

RL-P should have comparable SQ and much better SPL in a ported box because it needs a pretty big box sealed to have flat response down to the lows...

Check out the graphs on Soundsplinter's website, pretty informative.

I would tune even lower than 30-32. My 15" Rl-P is tuned at 29 in 3.1 ft^3 and it sounds awesome. Excellent sq. I had it in 2.1 sealed before going ported and the ported has much better low end response. This may be because my sealed box was a little leaky, but either way a ported box tuned low is the way to go!
