two vs one?

Well, ive been thinking, and I could get two cheap 15's, two 12s or two 10s. Apparently the 10s hit rea l nice and clear, while the 12 are a mix of deep bass with quick response, and then 15's are just hella loud.

so, in a trunk, i could get two 10s, or two 12s., then again one loud 12 or a 15.

I want loud, combined with quality, so i have narrowed it down

10s just wont be enough, although (running on a budget might be logitcal to go with these)

and I like two 12's, they would be perfect

but two 15s would be insane. probably too loud, but I do alot at the lake in summer, so the parking lot is close too the water then the 15s would come in handy, but i dont want to get them just for that.

Point to this thread - I want to know your guys experiences with different types, sizes, and wattages of subs.

And one last question would be like, what if i were to get a 15, and a 12? would that sound like crap?

I Just finish mine up it has 1 12" Alpine type-r in a 2.1 cu. ft. slot ported enclosure with a simple ProfileAp1000M pushing 500rms @2ohms and I'm hitting 139 Db's and still have very clean SQ

I have 2 15's, and yes, they are ungodly loud..need to get it metred though. I have had 2 12's a number of times, and 2 10's, a single 12, and a single 15.

They al have their strong points, It just depends on what you are looking for. The install is Key. If you go and but a prefab box, it may sound "good" but it is in no way built for your specific sub. If you are looking to DIY a sub box, I could give you a few tips. If not, there are a lot of accomplished sellers of enclosures, on the boards. Now for a starter system, i woud recommend getting one nice 1, with about 600 watts to power it (depending on the sub). I had 2 RE SE's, still one of my favorite setups, It was more than loud enough for me (at the time), but stil had some quality sound as well......ie it didnt sound like crap. Then i downgraded to one SE 12, in a better made box, and that amount of bass is good wnough for 80 % of peopl estarting out. It is all in what you want

I X2, install & specific sub > size.

There's some 10's that are sloppier than other 18's, and in the wrong kind of box, you could have two 15's that don't hit as hard as 1 12. In fact, i have that going on right now //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

I can't speak for every speaker, but i've learned the hard way, that specific to kicker L7's, the 10's are a great all around sub, fast response, hit wicked high notes, love super high tuning without losing a lot of response.

The 12's are the king for competition (SPL and DBdrag) because they're bigger, of course, than the 10's, but they still love high tuning, and meter very well.

The 15's on the other hand, are a completely different beast than the other two. They don't lose a TON of SQ over the 12's, if any, but they need to be tuned LOOOOW, as in a jump from 42-45hz for the 12's, to 30-35hz for the 15's......

And they don't meter as high as the 12's or even the 10's, just because of the way they're built, they just don't take charge in the higher, more meter-friendly freq. range.

I know you probably weren't even looking at kickers, and think i'm wasting your time, but i'm just trying to say you should figure out what kind of sound you want and go from there. A 10" or 12" from two diff. companies could sound completely different. Someone on here hit 148 or 149 with a single 10, most people don't even hit that with a couple twelves or a 15.

So any idea of a price range, or maybe even a speaker? That'll def. help you get your choices narrowed down a lot quicker!

Good luck.

Well, thanks alot actually, I was looking at kickers, I was also looking at Eclipse, and Powerbass.

I was to stay moderatly price. I mean ill be looking at maybe 500 dollars for it. Because ill be doing it after the fact of the HU and speakers. Although, Mr. Loki might sell me both his Powerbass 15's, and that would be before anything new. And because I dont have much money now, that would be rather cheap, but a hell of a deal.

I was looking at the square kickers, but those are our loudness, and I was loud, with clarity. No distortion at all. Not sure what you would reccomend for that.

Well, for starters what do oyu think. I mean... It will be my first, but I want my first to be really nice. Ill make my own box, and ill worry about the amp after I choose the sub (but the amp has to be cheap too!)

I like the sounds (just by reading) of the 15. Id like to have a 15, also impresses people by the look. You know?

Either that or 12s? I do think 10s will be too small, although when I ride in the car those seem like they would be fine. But just thinking about them, they seem to small. And I want to do it right the first time.

Ive also been told no bandpass, because presser on both sides of the sub is bad.

Out of..

  • One (loud) 12
    dual 12s

    one (loud) 15
    dual 15s

what do you like the best. Because i was thinking around 400 watts a speaker with dual, or maybe 600-800 watts for a single.

And the amp has to be affordable too. So all those factors, what do you think?

I think it's best to get something that will fit in the area that you have available in your vehicle, or how much cargo space you're willing to sacrafice for the box. Obviously the enclosure volume requirements for dual drivers will be larger than that of a single driver setup. Also larger doesn't necessarily mean louder, as someone mentioned above, the install plays a vital role on how the sub sounds.

I had dual Fosgate 10s of various models in the past, as well as a single 12" Brahma, single 12" Pioneer and now a single 15" RL-p.

500 is a very nice budget for a sub. I would look toward a single sub setup. What type of music to you listen too, car do you have, and trunk space are you willing to give up?

Welll, alot. I mean I dont care about the trunk (because I still have my backseat, Lol). Thats not a problem. Although, im not looking for as loud as I can get. Because I know i could get some sick stuff. But the thing is that I want it within.

Think of it like this, your waiting at a stop light, and everyone around on the sidewalks can hear your bass. Thats fine. Actually, almost perfect sounding. But when your sitting at the same light, and you can be heard a block away, thats just too much.

And I want quality. I want hard, clean hits, with nice lows. I know 15 get insane lows, but then again, (about what im looking for) wouldnt a dual 12 do the same as a single 15. Or would it just sound louder but no more low?

I want lower then 500, thats like max. I was thinking of an amp for about 110-150. And the sub being 175-225.

Rap, some rock (but I dont want it to sound like I own some ghetto navigator with an insane system that rich people have.

1991 Mercedes Benz 190E.

**** near all. Although, I dont want to open it and just be like wow, sub. Like, maybe stick a blanket and sweat shirt in the back, just because in the winter it gets really cold, and I dont want to cludder the backseat thought the whole winter.

Lol... blanket is seriously for the cold //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

I'm liking what I see of Powerbass at comps.

Too true, HAHAHA

no one has seemed to mention that the size of a subwoofer has little to do with how "low" it will go... That is almost entirely install dependant. The size of the subwoofer has no effect on how "tight" or "sloppy" it sounds. That is also install dependant. Buy a subwoofer that will perform optimally in the space and power that you have to work with.
