In our student union there are two 1200 MKII's (in the radio station though)... I want one.

Hard to tell you anything without knowing what they're going to be used for...direct drive 'tables are a somewhat different beast than belt drives, and how you set things up depends totally on how you're going to be using it.

Vinyl has better SQ than any other media...the trick is having the right setup, but that's another discussion alltogether.

Sounds like you want to dj...here is the deal

If you're serious, buy Technics 1200mkII or above, nothing else. If you don't, you'll regret it on down the road, trust me.

Don't buy anything Gemini (unless its the UMX series mixers but good luck finding one) or Numark, and be very weary of anything Stanton.

If you're starting out, get a set of Stanton 500 cartridges. If you're not scratching theres no need to eat your vinyl all to shit.

Other than that you just need some simple stereo cables and a set of headphones. Have fun.

no physical contact... no rumble, no background noise, no skips, no resonances.....

Might want to look into the 'MK5 version of the SL-1200, they added a few mods like taking out the click stop in the middle of the pitch fader, and doubling the range of the anti-skate...useless for hi-fi, but may come in handy for DJing.

Do a search for the "Technics SL-1200 FAQ" on Google, some useful info in there about fixing things, making adjustments, etc

The best turntables I had were all denon, dont use them anymore, my last was a DP-62L.

...more so features people pay extra for just to say they have them. Theyre virtually pointless if you ask me. That being said, I could justify dropping a little extra for the 3's just to get rid of the pitch gap...but then again, I use my MKII's more than anything just because I'm too lazy to move the new ones in.

...and I don't much care for the vestax 2000's either. they seemed like they were going to break when i touched them.

yea the MKII's are just fine for DJing the only purpose i see getting any other model would be for a wider range of pitch adjustment (M3D) but if your mixing in a beat thats more than 8 percent off pitch you're probably not realizing how silly a beat sounds sped up or slowed down that much.
