trunk rattle :(

So I have been getting tired of my trunk rattle and decided to ask around for opinions on great ways to stop trunk rattle. Right now i have a custom 15" with a 4 cu.ft box tuned to about 32 hz. The sub is facing upwards because thats the only way it will fit....lol. So my idea so far is to build another box and have it facing forward. Then I will seal it off from the trunk so that it is all exposed only to the cabin(when the seats are down, that is). Opinions????

your plan will work great and you'll probably be louder since you're wasting a lot of energy in the trunk.

you can also try wrapping some electrical tape around the trunk latch hoop - that is the most common source of rattle.

thanks man :) and ill try that.

I definitely agree with both posters and your idea. you will gain some DB and it might sound a bit cleaner sealed up back there. Make sure you get a a couple rolls of deadener before you build so you can line that truck top to bottom. I put two layers of audio techinx in my hatch and I cant hear any rattle in the car. It helps contain the sound pretty substantially.

I would highly recommend deadener first to remove rattles. Changing box design or firing area will only move the rattles around. I just did the outer sheet metal of my doors with 80 mil AT deadener and there is a huge difference already. It is proven that if you layer anything with deadener it will either stop or highly reduce rattle. Foam is another way to reduce rattles. Ideally you would do a layer of deadener, then a layer of foam, than a layer of mass loaded vinyl.

ok well what are some recommended companies that sell sound deadener for a good price? and anything good to stop license plate rattle cus thats just whats killin me the most :/

depends on the rattle. closed cell foam weatherstripping is perfect for license plates and most other panel-on-panel rattles. costs about $4.

you need to identify why it's rattling then isolate the two materials with something soft. deadener doesn't do that. it attempts to add mass (if it's the cheap stuff) and absorb vibrations (if it's the expensive stuff). that much power is going to move the trunk and shake the hell out of everything - deadener will increase volume but won't stop your trunk lid from moving.

firing it forward will increase output and eliminate trunk rattle. then deaden your cabin instead of your trunk.

ok so ive made a decision to try out some CLD from sound deadener showdown and try it on my trunk and ill look for some closed cell foam weatherstripping because that makes a lot of sense to just put it around the license plate back. If that doesnt help as much as i wished than i will go on to my original plan.

I use Audio Technix because of the price and the quality. It isn't the cheapest out there, but think it is the cheapest butyl dampener. It also has the qualities you want, in the thickness you need. I wouldn't hesitate to use it or recommend it to anyone. I'll have pics up soon of the doors I did in my megacab.

I think you should deaden/brace the hell out of your trunk.
