I would think it would make you loose spl due to the softness of the rubber. You want all surfaces as rigid as possible to reflect the sound waves and not absorb them. A guy at comp back in October told me that he gained 2db just from taking the carpet off his box.

I don't see how he gained that since you need to double cone area or power to get a 3db increase.

That 3db increase is assuming all other variables have been maxxed and aren't a limiting factor.

quick photo of my trunk with subs and lid. ive pushed the subs almost all the way touching the rear seats so there is about 10 inches maybe a little more between the subs and trunk lid

when I had my grand am, I got a lot of benefit from adjusting the trunk latch and making it tighter, I also added some door seal stripping to the trunk lid in addition to what's on the body of the car.
