to flare or not to flare (pvc)

This is my first pvc ported box build so any tips would be appreciated. planning on doing four ports (5" pvc) up through rear deck of a 94 merc cougar. sub is AQ hdc315 off 1200-1500 watts, im wondering if it will help to flare both ends of all of my ports? where to get 5" pvc at ( thats the biggest i can fit through my rear deck), anyone built a box like this?

Four 5" ports? Those would need to be VERY long to get a reasonable tuning. Even if you were using a larger box, say 4.5ft^3, and a 35hz tuning...each port would need to be 35" long.

4 ports is a tad much. you could get by with 2 sixes in the 4-4.5 easily. sometimes less is more

As port area gets TOO large, port tuning becomes more dominant in response and at a point the port will lose control of the subs dramatically when not right around tuning.

Two 6" ports is plenty (or 3 4") IDK if anyone makes 5" PVC?

Flare almost always gains DB and reduces turbulence, but is a bit of work to pull off, and potentialy dangerous if you use the deep frying method.

thanks for the responses, i forgot to say but someone said it box vol is probly around 4.5. hmmmm how could i port through my rear deck then if at all possible? theres only like 7" from the back window to the seats...

When I flare PVC, I normally use a 1 1/4" roundover bit on a double stacked baffle where the PVC meets the exterior of the box. This might save you some space and help you out.

ok first quiestion is how can i port through this i could fit 6' aeros in but it would be tight

second quiestion is this is about only 20" from trunk floor so port length is obviously limited by that

how long and what size ports?

Ideas??
