The newest fancy Alpine has no CD and uses USB. It costs a few hundred. It came out this year.
What have the Chinese done? They came out with a HU that plays CD's, has an USB port and an SD/MMC memory card port up front. It costs $71.57 for one unit, $68.70 for 3 to 6 units and there are unspecified discounts if you order more. It came out in, get this, 2006!

Now as to how good a HU it is, who knows. However when it comes to USB ports and card readers, that stuff is pretty foolproof and CD tech is old tech, so as long as you have a HU that can get a signal to an amp/speaker combo you like, you should be good to go if you want to move away from CD's into today's modern storage media.
On top of that, the Chinese HU also handles DVD's. How's that for gravy? Just add a screen to your vehicle and you're multi-media with a vengeance!
If the Chinese ever get the quality up to snuff, the rest of the world is in trouble! Modern tech, cheap price and doing it before anyone over here in the US does, now that spells Trouble with a capital T in the long run.
