This is what happens when you blindy rush into fiberglassing.

So an fyi, this is coming out like garbo, but I am going to forge ahead anyways. I'll make sure I got my flame suit on...

So my intention for my first fiberglass project was to make a simple gauge pod for an xscorpion voltmeter out of the stock din sized pocket in my car.

As I look at all these pics, this whole project was pretty much one big mistake after another. I am still going to attempt and complete it though, however terrible the end result may be.

I didn't take any pics of the mock up, but I basically cut a circle from cardboard a little bigger than the size of the voltmeter. Instead of using wooden dowels, because it's so small I ghetto'ly positioned it with cut chopsticks and hot glue'd everything in place. To attach the fleece to the pocket I also used hot glue.

The fleece glue'd for the basic shape. Did not glue fleece to the face of the circle like I should have in retrospect.

Fleece trimmed up. I should have taken my time and did a much better job with this.

Resin applied and drying in the sun. Propped up using professional materials - a stock monsoon amp and a box of crayola crayons.

First layer of mat.

Second layer of mat. Look at all that excess **** just dripping off rofl.

Trimmed off a lot of the extra ****. Painstakingly done so with a $9 harbor freight dremel.

That's where I'm at haha. Applying the chop mat was definitely harder than I assumed, as was most of this project so far. Haven't decided if I am going to bondo it yet, but still have to cut out the hole, grind, sand, and then paint. I'm hoping I will be able to sand it into a little better shape, as of right now it's more just a fiberglass lump.

I guess I'll just see what happens //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

you don't need to Fleece over it, if you are detaching the fiberglassed section from the plastic section all you needed to do was lay painters tape over the plastic, then a layer of foil, then a layer of wax. glass directly onto the waxed foil. about 2-3 layers, then release the fiberglass when cured.

there really is no point in fleecing.

That probably would have worked better //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif

Intention was to make it a solid piece, tho, and then just pop it back in. Sanded and drilled the plastic for the resin to adhere to.

i see, so basically you're creating a faceplate..

well, if you do start over, you either can or don't have to use fleece. for something like that project i would use a thinner fabric. i use Spandex material for fleecing, soaks up less resin and turns out with better curves IMO.

another thing if you need to make a mounting rink for something small use Popsicle sticks and hot glue them together into a circle. a lot of people do this when making tweeter pods for their sails or such.

Yeah, those pics are with about 3 layers of primer applied then sanded. It def could have turned out worse, but at the same time also could have been a lot better.

I'm hoping to have it painted tonight and in the car tomorrow.

ive seen much worse, froim shops, in show cars.
haha, that's reassuring then //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif
