They Vista be frozd!

you can turn it off in security center, which is found in the control panel
screw firewalls altogether, not needed in a home environment unless you're a douche surfer
With the internet today they are very needed, even in a home environment.

thats your take on things, i havent used a firewall or antivirus in years and have had ONE problem and that was 3 years ago. a simple reinstall fixed that
I have always turned off the firewall on all my machines but I do use AVG for antivirus.

IMO firewall is useless

You still need a software firewall though, yes a router will stop most, but not all, outside attacks but it will do nothing to stop malware on your pc from pjoning home where a good software firewall will.
Will it stop malware from phoning home ? Yes ... However, most people will just click the allow button on the pop-up ...
The Windows firewall (XP SP2/3, Vista) + a hardware firewall is better than a good software firewall w/o a hardware firewall and a hell of a lot less annoying and intrusive ...

Ultimately, a good hardware firewall and a good software firewall would provide the best protection, but there's still some degree of hassle that goes along w/ a good software firewall that may not be worth it to the average joe.

Well, I always use Zone Alarm and a router. Just to clear up your terminology, a router is not a firewall, NAT just happens to function as a nice alternative. A true hardware firewall actually inspects every packet whereas the NAT technology in a router does not. It works by only allowing packets in that the computer requested and discarding packets from addresses that are foreign. This does act as a godd firewall, but once malware gets in it is useless where a real hardware firewall works in both directions. This is why I always still recommend using Zone Alarm and AVG.
