so i have a 4 18 box thats ported down the middle on the same side as the subs (subs up port up) and i only have 2 speakers in it, one on the bottom half of each side of the port. one speaker hole without a speaker i plugged with a piece of wood, the other is open, big hole in the box.

however the subs still play fine, not as loud as with both holes plugged but still pretty loud and low and the subs aren't unloading any more than usual

anyone explain what's going on here?

just because there is a hole in the box doesn't mean it will unload or act weird. The electrical current will keep the coil in the gap most of the time. The box usually makes it unload if your having xmax problems

so the second port doesn't affect the first one?

just kind of interesting since everyone insists that ported box need to be very well designed and built to work

not to say a proper box doesn't help tremendously lol

You have a leaky ported box, no more no less. The open hole isn't going to act as a port at any frequency your subwoofers are playing. The port will still load some and the woofers will still see resistance. The hole may not be big enough to let air leak out 100% depending on how big your box is and how much air they can move. Your getting cancellation, but yes your subs will still play music and play decently, albiet not 100% volume and not with the normal frequency response. If your subs have a tight suspension they may not bottom out.
