Theoretical Banking/Check Question

Ok, I understand what you are saying, but the company is a major pharmaceutical company, and the company address, as well as the bank address have been verified. Could what you have said still be true? I was thinking a possible payment from a class action lawsuit or something along those lines, but he doesn't recall ever using any of their products and there was nothing about any suits against the company on Google.

Just because the info on the check is correct does NOT mean it is legit... would be easy for me to choose a bank in a town where a company has corporate offices, fraudulently print up a check and put fake account info on it, or even better, use real account numbers (obtained from an unrelated legit check) and fake a check. Might even pass muster initially.

Seriously here... if it's legit he can call the company and verify, if it's not, and he cashes it, he WILL be liable for any damages.

Yeah but then the bank would send the check back to this company and unless a random employee at a reputable company is committing the fraud, nobody would get the account info as diduhearthat stated. So what would be the point? Some random person being like "Haha, we made you think you had money but you dont"??

Plus, he doesn't plan on cashing it, he plans on depositing it, so if it gets taken back out, no big deal. But after how long would it be safe to dip into it?

It doesn't matter what the name and address on the check says. I'll print you one that says Microsoft 1600 Redmond, WA. So what?

The banks do not look at that. The only thing that matters is the routing numbers at the bottom of the check. That is what determines where the check goes. You can go into any bank and ask them to verify that the routing number at the bottom is the same as on the check. They can look it up on thier computers with a kind of white pages listing for banks routing numbers.

It's possible you got a real check by mistake, but chances are they will catch the mistake and you'll still have to pay it back. I'd still assume it's a scam first.

go to a check cashing place pay the 10% and run with your money
While they get your SSN, copy of your driver's license, phone number and fingerprint to track you down with later on.... some of that can be faked, but you will likely get caught. They'll also have you on video, which all of those places have.

this has happened to me. Got a check for 4k. Put it in my account and a few days later it was taken directly out and cost me like 200 in charge back fees. Really not worth it. I know it tempting to directly deposit/cash the check because its alot of money but dont. Ask them to verify the check. They will call the bank and see if the funds are available and if the check is valid or not. If it is, then go for it, conmpanys mistake.

Yes, this is what we wound up doing... the check actually scanned but the account number didn't match up. Called the company and apparently they have gotten a few other calls about this. Said they think it is coming from somewhere inside UPS //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/thumbsdown.gif.d22f25895e9b40f2300c953691dacfa2.gif Makes sense because it was sent to a school address thats only been in use for a couple of weeks, and not many people have that address. Thanks to everyone that provided helpful information.

I'm not surprised it turned out to be bogus. Charge backs can take over 2 months. Wrongfull or mistaken payments can take upto 1 year just to file a lawsuit against you to get the money back, and easily another 6-8 months for the law suit to go thru and you to be ordered to pay back the money you were not supposed to recieve.
