I've been reading and seraching on this forum and others fro a while now. Learning a lot in the process. I've read different manufacturers sites, some say their product will perform on either ported or sealed, others say to run it ported, others sealed. Also read some magazines products reviews where they say that they run the speaker on some particular kind of both, following the advice given by the manufacturer.

There is something that I still can't figure out, and that is the point for this thread, reading a subwoofer specification data, how do I know when a speaker is best suited for a ported or sealed enclosure?//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif

Forget your particular preference for either ported or sealed, I just want to know according the specs, because I know that there are a lot of people out there that will like to know that too.

quick rule of thumb, look at the total q factor

0.2x-0.3x vented

0.4x-o.5x sealed

0.6+ IB

EBP is a way of determining which type of box might be best suited for the specs.

fs divided by qes. less then 50 sealed, 50-90 either, 90+ ported.

I use the EBP and Qts. Also, modeling up the sub in a program such as winisd (ask google where to find it, don't ask me) will give you an idea. I like to model how well they do sealed in a max flat alignment first to get an idea if they would like a sealed enclosure or not. If a sub yields a theoretical F3 of 45hz or above, I will stay away from it sealed.

These are all just suggestions though as actual performance may not be the same.
