Waiting until the last second (or for 56k'ers like myself, the last 30 seconds or so) before placing your maximum bid. I won't even think about placing a bid on the auction until then...and then going all in for what I think it's worth. If I win it, great...if I lose it, well, the other guy just wanted to pay more, and I know I couldn't have afforded to go higher anyway.

I expect to be properly cited for that material.
