:Then I won't say it:Why? Something wrong with the 3.4's?
Umm, yes.
When I had my '99 GA GT, I was a member of a few N-body forums. The aluminum GM 3.4L V-6 motor is very well known for a Lower Intake Manifold gasket problem. Very, very common. I've literally seen accounts of it letting go within 18k miles.
Also, people have had the problem more then once. I.e. - @ 25k miles & again @ 60k miles.... etc.
There are a few TSB's regarding it but no recalls (to the best of my knowledge). I'
ve been rid of the car (after doing my own LIM @ 65k miles) for ~6 mos., GM actually came out with a LIM kit (including the mani bolts, gaskets, etc) that you'd need to do it.
I'll try to find a few reference links for you in a lil bit. But, the thing is, it's not only Grand Am's, nor is it only N-Bodies... Anything from Malibu's (N boydy version) to *cough*Ventures*cough*...
Average dealer time on the N-Bodies for R&R ranges from $500-700 for the job. Consider 5.X hours labor time per the shop manual + parts.
If you do it yourself, as I did, it'll be around $270-300. It will take 4-6 hours.
I'm pretty sure that this will effect your year as well. I know of people with an '02 3.4L that had the same problem.
I'm off to get links...
Sorry, but I just wanted you to be aware of it.
