So we got dude's little bit of audio into his work van.
I didn't know it prior to getting stuck into it but we were essentially working with the same interior space as a standard cab pickup.
It's an '05 3/4-ton Chevy Express - with a divider between the driver's/passenger's seats and the cargo area.
He works for a company that builds and installs commercial fire suppresion systems so his van is always full of various types of chemicals meant for that purpose. The owner of the company had all the vans fitted with a divider between the cargo area and the front so that the employee isn't always having to breath in the Ansulex and whatever else he may have multiple containers of behind him.
So - the little setup we hooked him up with sounds better than I was expecting for what it is.
When he told me he was tight for usable space I thought it meant he simply didn't want the clutter of audio gear taking up room.
I was wrong - with all the crap he carries with him for his job there simply wasn't any room for anything bigger than a single 10" //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif
So - we built him a sealed box from .5" MDF (yeah, I know, but how thick does it need to be for a single 10" on
The amp's rated for 480w @ 4 Ohms mono bridged but it
is a Profile so I figure about 400w to possibly 450w being all that it will actually do.
350 is within the sub's RMS ratings while still being enough to get plenty of output from the little guy and allowing for a bit of headroom from the amp.
The AP1000 does have a bass boost function but I didn't bother to look through the manual to see at what Hz it is centered. Just playing with it for a quick second resulted in what sounded like complete //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/sick.gif.b1847c8dabbfeeddbcf1a78052249e10.gif to me so it got left turned completely counterclockwise. Bleah. It wasn't good.
Aside from that one issue (which is easily solved by simply not engaging it) it sounds pretty freggin' good for what he's got running. He had the coaxials being driven by the deck running full range - not bothering to utilize the HU's internal crossovers - so after tweaking those a bit and ridding the coaxs of everything from about 65Hz and lower it really livened up.
Start to finish including taking the van's interior apart and putting everything back in place once we were finished was about 2 hours total.
For my labor helping him install it + the wiring I donated to this little operation he slid me a Grant after it was over with as well as supplying the 12 pack we drank our way through while working.
The cash he paid me in addition to the $20 referrel credit I got from
Crutchfield because of his purchase made it about the same as making $70 + a six-pack for 2 hours work.
I'd call that a successful afternoon considering I had absolutely nothing else planned except lazing around in front of the TV or maybe online...
