Its weird that all 5 houses have that same damage.

Does the house have a fireplace? Check to see if it goes all the way up. If it doesn't or if there's not one there, it could be where one used to be. Back in the early 1900's a lot of people still used coal burning and fireplaces, heat in rowhomes for heat and that could be where the chimney was.
