car does overheat, has for some time now, but never smoked like this until recently.Blown headgasket, though, would normally result in poor performance - overheating - possibly water in the oil.........suffice it to say it would most likely be considerably more obvious and much sooner.
Conversely a mild leak on a valve cover gasket can create nothing but a mess for a great long while before it gets bad enough to have to replace it. (though I do not suggest waiting at all once any mechanical problem is successfully diagnosed)
