Where on that engine is the alternator?

I'd be willing to bet it's much more simple than the motor completely dying....I'll bet it's something like a mild valve cover leak dripping down on hot engine parts causing your smoke //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif

Blown headgasket, though, would normally result in poor performance - overheating - possibly water in the oil.........suffice it to say it would most likely be considerably more obvious and much sooner.

Conversely a mild leak on a valve cover gasket can create nothing but a mess for a great long while before it gets bad enough to have to replace it. (though I do not suggest waiting at all once any mechanical problem is successfully diagnosed)

car does overheat, has for some time now, but never smoked like this until recently.
