The new mag is xbl :D

wow seems like alot of hate for the new mag
It's actually just people who have had a bad experience with other XBL^2 designs.

Of course, that is as valid as saying that the RE MT sounds bad on music so all overhung designs must sound bad //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif It's just a motor topology and can be implemented MANY different ways.

XBL itself does not cause this, especially not when coupled with a copper coated pole and a reasonable coil like this Mag design. The XXX used a fairly high inductance coil (8 layers), that is part of the culprit for the lack of top-end extension -- not the topology itself. They wanted to get the highest BL from a short coil, so more layers were needed //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
A few other XBL designs followed a similar design philosophy. If you implement an XBL design with a low inductance coil, as it is intended for SQ subs and what Nick has in store for the Mag, then you have no issue with top-end.
As long as the box isn't built too large which a lot of people gearing for SPL tend to do, right?

The real issue at hand is when do i get to see/play with it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

And why hasnt nick called me in months, //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crying.gif.ec0ebefe590df0251476573bc49e46d8.gif:crying://content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crying.gif.ec0ebefe590df0251476573bc49e46d8.gif

Thanks Jacob, I knew I read that somewhere, it was the high inductance of the coil that killed it's upper frequency extension.

Though I will say that my old Blueprint 1201 sounded quite a bit nicer than the xxx, neither to my ears hold a candle to my Daytons, but that's just me.

I'm not hating on the Mag at all, never had experience with this one, or the two previous versions so I can't comment, I'm just commenting on my experiences with XBL motors.

You can mess up the response of any sub with a huge box -- I'm pretty sure that anyone buying a Mag isn't going to make that mistake. Nick has purposely made this sub more of an SQ sub and less of an SPL sub than the old Mag.

Having used an XXX and a Brahma in the house before a few years ago, I can tell you from personal experience that I had no problems with either...the Brahma in particular.

I'm not saying that what you are hearing is wrong, just that people are misunderstanding what the cause is....it's not the motor topology at all. If you believe that it is directly related to the fact it is XBL^2, then what do you propose causes this problem?

Let's not write the Mag off for trying to go the lower distortion route. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

But it has XBL 2, it must roll off at 40 hz.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eek.gif.771b7a90cf45cabdc554ff1121c21c4a.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

lol

Many people prefer overhung subs to XBL -- largely because they find the sound of the parameter shift vs. excursion pleasing.

Your Qts goes up and boosts upper end response (making it boomy) as excursion increases, the same as putting a sub in a box that is too small or simply running a high Q sub in a small box. This is also part of the issue at hand -- normal topologies tend to exaggerate the upper end as excursion increases. XBL does not, so it sounds "weird" -- but it is actually remaining flat, rather than actually losing anything.

And if I remember correctly, the XXX coil's inductance/ohm still keeps the inductive corner frequency well above your "standard" bandwidth. I'll have to check when I get home.

So are they still gonna use the baskets from the recent prototypes? Or is this whole discussion for the NEXT version of the mag/bm? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

No, Nick is using an "enclosed motor" type basket. This acts as a huge heat-sink, which is the primary reason for it's use. It'll look pretty sharp //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
