This thread started off with a decent enough question that was addressed quite a few times. Unfortunately, quite a few individuals felt that it should turn into a racial issue and not a dialogue to understanding. The word should never be used by either whites or those of color. A sad portion of history led Americans of color to attempt ownership of the word, to take away the stings of its' history. So there are people of color who use the word when they should let it die. I, myself, don't refer to anyone of color with use of the N word. Nor do I refer to whites with other then their given name that they introduce themselves with. Ignorance hiding behind a keyboard with internet access is a pathetic site to behold. In it's infancy this thread could have helped/bridged an understanding but those with a "closet racist mentality" interfered, hence why their still remains such a division in America today. I frequent the forums for the wealth of information and ideas that is shared. When a thread like this appears, you reserve your judgement and let it play itself out. If those who are so determined to use the "N" word in a crowded room for shock factor--you'll only prove that this word still incites anger and violent reactions. I wish I could take every rap star who's peddled this word to make millions and show them the damaged they've caused in the process. I'd also like to take half of their earnings to put towards something useful, such as the prevention of hate crimes, public education and awareness, community and youth programs to foster a togetherness where color isn't an issue---but contribution to the society as a whole prevails. Think about it.
