It's not quite that simple. The stock alt for a vehicle is always sized with a reasonable degree of overhead. Knowledgeable mechanics I've dealt with say 50-60% more current available than what is required on average. That allows the alt to run relatively comfortable and last several years.
Sake - there's not a specific number that's guaranteed to work or not work in any given car. There are many variables that can effect the outcome.
In most cases - 1000w seems to be a reasonable limit, but there are plenty of stories of people having a lot of trouble with that.
On the other hand, plenty of people run 1500w+ stock with no problems to speak of.
The only true solution to a struggling electrical system is a high output alternator.
Batteries are secondary, and capacitors are useless.
