Hmm, I'm not sure if that would matter. Its main purpose serves to stabilize the flux pattern in the gap as the coil throws back EMF into the circuit. I suppose it does serve to negate some of the inherent inductance of the coil but I don't know if aluminum is any less effective. I don't blame you, though. I would want them to be the same.
I'm unsure where my calipers are but I'll measure up when I find them. It's a standard TC1000 motor.
