Talking to RF Ref today...

just thought it was interesting, but i was talking to my rep today, Rockford is working on a new amp thats about the same size as a 4002 and puts out 1,000rms, which if youve seen a 4002 thats dam small, but the cool thing is, current draw is only supposed to be like 15-20amps or so, guess using tech from big t15kw, dont know how they are doing it, might not even go through with it, just designing right now, so....

nothing else, that is all

rep not ref...damz

The T15KW has huge caps inside... the amp uses a maximum of 500-amps from the car + current from the caps to make it's power, the draw from the car is capped at 500-amps. So... as the caps are drained power output decreases since the amp can't draw over 500-amps.

It's not magically over 100% efficient, it just moves the power around the time domain by charging the caps when the amp is drawing under 500 amps of current from the car - then using that energy later. If you continuously use the full power level then it will drop down to around 5kw or so of output when the caps are drained.

It basically counts on music not utilizing the full output of the amp at all times and shifts current draw from the car through the time domain.

yeah, ill wait till i see one to believe it, i just was passing some info along
dont know how the t15kw works either really
RF is just playing fast and loose with their ratings. Generally speaking, the term RMS Power (although there is no such thing) refers to a continuous sine wave output. RF's amplifiers using their "Hybrid" technology are nothing more than amplifiers with large® banks of capacitors. These help provide the specified power during musical transients, but longer duration output will empty the capacitors, lower the power output, and greatly reduce efficiency. I showed some of the preliminary math on this in another thread.

You can't make power out of nothing; while the instantaneous current draw is low, the average current draw is still about the same as all other amplifiers of this topology.

Honestly, I find it offensive that RF continues to hang on to these erroneous claims. They are lucky they have many years of brand power that make such bs marketing acceptable to some.

edit: According to RF the last time I looked, the T15kW never draws more than 350A of current; have they changed their literature, Jacob?
