Crossovers are velcroed to the carpet under the seats, the upstage is awesome, I was a little skeptical, but love the set-up. I am working on the tuning right now though.

the IDA has no CD player, the stock HU is not connected onl for clock and night time lights, the only CD palyer is the changer?

Hi grizzly02,

Some quick Q's:

1) When you say the SQ of the X001 is better than the 9857 you had before, are you talking about iPod, CD, or both? I currently have a 9857 too, and am debating swapping it out for the X001 + H701 like you have... looks like a sweet setup. I'd still have to get a changer, though....

2) For the H701 controller, do you use it that often? I'm thinking if I go that route, I'd keep the controller in the glove box and only pull it out when I want to set it up or make changes. But, if you use it to switch EQ presets (or something like that), maybe keeping it in the dash is best? Any comments are appreciated.

Also, how's the Sirius sound? I have that with my 9857, but the compression was so bad on the SQ I canceled my subscription after only 1 month... Does the MX expander help? I have the Alpine SIRALP1 tuner BTW...

The Mx expander helps some, but yes it sounds a little compressed, no where near the way it did with 9857, remmeber the 9857 is only 1-bit DAC, the X001 is a 24 bit burr brown DAC. Everythinf sounds better and remeber if you use the H701, the X001 has the ability to cahnges the presets on the h701 from the x001. But you wil need the c701 to setup those presets!

I just like it mounted because it has a sick graphic display!

All in all the X001 just sounds better!, now when the 9887 comes out, I will be getting that! I think, unless Alpine comes out with a nice dead head!

Hi grizzly,

Do you miss the BBE from your 9857? On my deck, I find it makes a pretty big difference on improving the SQ (although I don't have an H701 to play with)... As I understand it, BBE does some harmonic shifting to "expand" the bandwidth of songs, which is useful for compressed audio files to help make them sound "fuller"... although it could just be marketing hype?

Also, I could potentially get the 9861 (DVD w/ optical out) instead of getting the RUX-C701 to control the H701... Is the optical out worth the tradeoff in iPod connection? The USB connection on the X001 sound like the better alternative (for iPod fans), as you're getting the X001 to do the D/A conversion (vs. just receiving an analog signal).

Anyway, sorry for all the questions. I can't wait to get my system upgraded... which is probably why I have too much time to look and think about all this stuff...

Iwas going to go with the 9861, just waiting for a newer version to come out or I am going with the 9887, but yes the optical output would be sweet!
