Should be a difference in spl. Dont know if you would hear the difference though, probably just on the meter.

why not just go with a 15" XXX instead? same displacement I think - just a lower resonant frequency.

Way, way wrong. Sd of a 15 is 810 cm^2 and the Sd of an 18 is 1210 cm^2. Going from a single 15" sub to an 18" sub is like adding a 12" sub to the single 15" setup. There will be quite a difference. Not sure if you would benefit on the Sq side (probably just depends on what brand 18" driver), but you would surely benefit when it comes to SPL.
