Switching Head Units

Hi, right now I have an 5-6 year old Pioneer head unit in my car. I am thinking about replacing it with a new head unit, but i am unsure about installation. Would installing a a new head unit be as simple as unplugging the wire harness from the old head unit and plugging it into the new one? Would this only be true if I bought another Pioneer head unit, or would the same wire harness work for any brand? Thanks.

i dont think the harness should prevent you from moving on to a better deck

its quite simple do the wiring why not look for a new model deck?
