switchin' lanes

perhaps someone could enlighten me to the significance of the phrase "switchin' lanes" in nearly every mainstream rap song? it's also nearly always rhymed with wood grain, but i understand that part. why do people keep saying this?

 
mainstream rappers rap about cars, cash, and hoes. so their lyrics are going to be derived from them and switching lanes has to do with their super fast cars passing up slower cars (owned by less wealthy people)? just a conjecture, although i like jujumantb's explanation.
