turn off low pass filter when your setting up your amp gains and set it to 80 once your done. Sometimes the DD-1 is very restrictive of how loud you can get. A moderate to heavy clip will burn coils but a soft clip is perfectly fine for daily listening too.Keep sub level at +6. Use the Digital Multi-Meter method to see how much power your getting out of the amp.

Ok I will try that. The headunit does not clip at max volume so I'm guessing I should tune it at max volume right?

yup. If your at 60-70% gain and the subs are still quiet and the headunit to amp's input voltage is still low then its something with your head unit.
