Ok so I have it hooked up to mb quart oa800.4 so I have it bridged to 400w @ 4ohms and the sub is 500w rms I have it hooked up to jbl ms8, I had the gain set to about 2v which is about half way then did my auto tune and pushed the gain down to about 11 o'clock and it pounds, does not sound distorted but does kinda rattle my rear view mirror and I can feel it on some songs, I have it in a box I built that is 1.17 cu sealed, is that normal or am I over powering, amp does not feel very hot and no headlight dimming

"sundown e12 thumps, am I over powering?" When you say thumps, that is usually a good thing, but I am assuming it is a bad thump? Like a bad ported box thump? I have never powered subs with more than a 2 chan amp (esp 1 sub with a 4 chan amp - not normal to me - I am here to learn so I am not dismissing that route), so your config is odd to me at first glance, but it does seem you are underpowering the sub, but what is this thump in your op exactly?

it's the lowest line Sundown sub though. He's underpowering it, but it's not hard to overpower.
EDIT: Thought it was the SA series, not E series

I was kidding about it being impossible to over-power one.

Also, I had the sig dibs on the first quote in your sig. GTFO

Lol thank u guys, lol yeah it's my 1st nice sub and I didn't know it banged like that, it felt like I had 2 12s back there I can kinda feel it in my hair and seat, just didn't know if I was over powering it, so since its a 500w sub and 400w amp then more than likely I won't hurt the sub

I'm not sure what anyone else will tell you. But from what I've read here. Sundown normally UNDERrates their subwoofer RMS. So honestly you could give it more clean power and I'm sure it would still be fine lol

Lol my bad man.

Guess you never had anything that loud before lmaoo. Its normal, shove some foam in the rear view mirror and do some deadening. Enjoy the output.
Sundown subs are usually decently loud, even the SD.

That's a good box then.

Jacob posted somewhere that he trusts his subs to handle double RMS as long as it's clean.

They are not underrated. Just like any good sub, run a rated sine wave to it and it will tap out.

After impedance rise, the sub does not see the full power your amp can put out. The subs aren't really over-rated per say. You can put a big amp on them, but the actual power they see is close to rated

If anything it sounds like you're giving it just the right amount of power to make it hit hard, but not heat up anything or cause sound quality loss.

You'll have to qualify your statement with time (and frequency)... for example; this is a 60 Hz sine test on an SA-8 v.2 (2" coil) compared to a popular (at the time) 2.5" coil driver :

SA-8_v2_Thermal.jpg

SA-8 v.2 is rated 500 RMS.

Video as well -- graphed the data from here :

I use a high frequency for this test as it's purely a thermal torture test -- the low excursion is very thermally challenging.

Sounds like you are fine //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
