I just tried this and very happy with the results. If you are like me and have a trunk car and **** at using the tape measurer, but have an idea of what size will fit. Build a model out of carboard first. I am experiementing around with box sizes, depths, heights and didn't really know what the biggest I could fit. By modeling, I gained about 1" of height and 3" of depth. I dunno how many pros do this, but I think it is a good idea. Any of those who build boxes on a regular basis try this?

yes..

i personally use 1/4" ply and hammer it together, so its almost as strudy as the final enclosure, that way i know i can put it in and take it out without hassle

x2 cardboard was too flimsy so I used 1x2's and it worked out nicely...

What do you mean 1x2s? To support the 1/4" plywood? (ie the corners?)

no, 1x2's for the whole thing, basically a frame...I have like 20 boards out back so I put them to use...
