am starting the idea of putting a syatem in my 06 Altima. I am going strictly for sq,not spl. I completely understand the concept of a great HU and high-end Ft speakers with a quality amp to push them. My question is..to get more of sq out of a sub,do you go sealed or ported? I do not want to use all of my trunk space,so im either going to go with 8's or 10's. Any ideas or input?

most will say sealed but a properly designed/installed ported box can be just as effective.

Sealed box are generally less efficient but allow more room for error in design and airspace. Hard to really go wrong with a sealed box

hang the right subs off your rear deck (remove stock speakers and instal subwoofers) and you have IB (infinite baffle) and there is no better bass for sq.

Depends on the driver being used. Usually a sealed box is the only way to get a fairly flat in vehicle response from 20hz+. A ported box will typically suffer from a large peak in the 30hz range then drop off too rapidly below and above the tuning frequency. To get an accurate response curve you would want to avoid any peaks or dips. That being said, some drivers are suitable for ported boxes in the car when the goal is SQ. Usually the tuning will have to be fairly low (20-30hz) in order to maintain a flat response.

The reason why you must usually tune low is because a woofer in a ported box behaves similar to a woofer in IB or free air above the tuning frequency. You want most of your bass to come from the woofer not the port (due to phasing and group delay issues which can "muddy" the sound). You only want the port to step in when the woofer begins to naturally roll off, increasing the low end extension.

60nDown...im not being a smartass, but ive never heard of that..Does it work?
Infinite baffle - by definition, you are separating the front of the woofer from the rear with an "inifinitely large" baffle, so that woofer behaves as if it were in free air. There is no acoustic suspension from the air; the baffle's only job is to separate the energy from the front of the speaker and the energy from the back of the speaker. The usually accepted definition is when the volume of the rear chamber is greater than the 10x the Vas of the driver. In an auto setup, it's essentially a very big sealed box where you seal off the trunk from the cabin and fire the woofer into the cabin. Most auto setups aren't true IBs because trunks just aren't that big; but they are close enough to behave like an IB. Only certain drivers are suitable for IB use.

do one nice 10" ported. you'll have the low end covered and if built correctly it will sound great. my recommendations are the Oz matrix elite (if you've got money to burn), Infinity kappa perfect, or even an IDmax
