Subjective opinion of experienced peeps

I was just reading an argument and someone posted joe blows testing of dual woofs all on the same amps doing burps. For the lowliest of dual 15's he recorded 153db and for the caviar of woofs he recorded 156db. First off, does'nt ear damage happen above 140? And second I don't give a shyt about 3db. So what I want is, assuming identical woofs, please give me your subjective opinion of how loud they would be? And please based on real world experience, no armchair pilots!!!! (use descriptions such as loud, kinda loud, holy shit, WHAAT??, etc.). Also if you could briefly describe what kind of audio guy you are so that I can put your opinion into proper perspective.

1 x 10 (my experience and that would be not loud enough but ight) - don't bother to comment on the 10's because they are outta here!!!

2 x 10's

1 x 12's

2 x 12's

1 x 15's

2 x 15's

1 x 18's

p.s. thanks for all your input fellas. Helps alot.

1 x 10's 78.5

2 x 10's 157

1 x 12's 113

2 x 12's 226

1 x 15's 176.6

2 x 15's 353.3

1 x 18's 254.3

those are the approximate cone areas for each setup and *generally* more cone area means louder

ear damage isnt just a presure thing its also a frequency dependant. the louder and higher the freq the more likely it would damage your ears. 145 db at 5khz would make you hurt and do damage more so than 145 db at 20 hz

But remember, you can't just look at cone area. It's total displacement (Sd x Xmax) that matters (and ofcourse box size/type aswell). If those two 10's only have 7mm Xmax each, but the one 12 has 30mm Xmax, the single 12 is in all likelyhood going to be louder.

But these comparisons aren't really fair. Someone may have went from 2 Sony 12's to a single 12" XXX.......there is really no way to generalize it based off of sub diameter.

are we talking daily, or burping? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Either way; excursion can make up for less cone area.
sD * Xmax = nothing @ tuning. specifically if you're tuning near fs.

for daily though, you are of course correct. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

But how many times are you actually playing at the tuning freq
for burping? occasionally in testing, my point is that as you tend to get closer to tuning the less you'll be able to drive the moofer to reach xsus or xmag.

an old DD vs. an old Stroker with the same ridiculous # of wattage... neither of them will hit the limits at tuning. it'll still be hard near tuning.

i personally burp 0.8hz from tuning right now. but i'm still modding the second chamber.

btw-squeak, you know that i'm not arguing with you. just wanted to make the distinction.
