Sub up Port back in a trunk?

i have an 87 Mustang notchback and was thinking of a sub stage for it. my problem is space.. it is about 10 inches tall, but there are metal rods at the top of the trunk allowing me about 8 inches of height to work with.

at first i wanted to do a pair of 10s slanted so that they would fit... then i wanted to do 2 8s because they would fit better.. but now im thinkin, "screw the small stuff, i can do a 15 facing up and port facing the rear." my only problem is that ive heard that Sub up Port back in a trunk is a fail. ive always done sub back port back but it wont work this time..

this car is supposed to be a street/strip car as well so its either i try this, or just get a diff car for audio.

I think this will work as long as you remove the rear speakers and leave them open so that there will be air flow for the sub.
That's already done, but since I want to put a 15 in the trunk, and there is only about 15.5 inches of clearance and my trunk opening isn't all that large, I don't know how well it would work to do a box that is sub back, port back.

Ive put two kicker CVR's in a newer mustang, subs up port to the side and was doing 142's on a JBL 300.1.... not the loudest in the world but a respectable daily beater. And the newer mustangs have way less room than the older ones like yours.
