i found a few pics of this old hu and i was wondering: where is the volume button? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eyebrow.gif.fe2c18d8720fe8c7eaed347b21ea05a5.gif

i looked everywhere, found many other pics of it, but seems like it doesn't have volume control, or am i just tripping? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

alpine's support for older models manuals is down also, so it's no use either...

The volume is controlled by a big rocker that is on either side of the big hog nose on the front. You grab it on either side between your thumb and fore finger and turn the rocker upwards for volume up, downwards for volume down. It works well, it can be remotely controlled as well. That unit along with the 7949 and 7969 has a digital optical output.

Nice older deck but it has no subwoofer output, only front and rear outputs. Great sounding unit though it was the top of the line in around 1996, I had the 7930 which was one step below it.

dude, that's actually awesome, i think... wonder why Alpine gave up on this sort of volume control...

i can't see it on the pics i have, but i get the idea and i guess i'd love to try a hu like this, it must be a little more difficult to accidentaly turn the volume up and down when pressing other buttons on the faceplate...

digital output is great too for external digital processors... alpine was really into the SQ department back in the late 90's, huh?

but i was sure it had subwoofer control, so it doesn't?

it's processor, the 7949, is also a LOVELY hu: even copper plated chassis and stuff //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

these things cost so little that i'm intrigued to try one, but get me //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crying.gif.ec0ebefe590df0251476573bc49e46d8.gif only by thinking it won't accept no cds other than original ones...

The 7949 and 7939 will play some CD-R's, but not all brands, and not consistently either. I had a 7949 and had the best luck with the Maxell CD-R Pro discs burnt at a slower speed.

The 7939 sold for $700 new in '96.

i can easily get one for less than 100 dollars here... 7949 goes around the same price... *wondering*

edit: just another question> have you ever tried digital output of these hu's? does it sound a lot better from it than from the traditional RCA ones?

You cannot use the optical output without an outboard processor like the PRA-H400 or similar model. The optical output is so that you can use outboard DAC's.

The 7939, 7949 or 7969 when used with a PRA-H400 or similar (500, 600, etc.) is a very tough combination to beat.
