I have a feeling OP's a bit like this guy and doesn't know enough to explain to his friend what works and what doesn't.

While I admit I have plenty to learn before I'm anywhere close to fully informed on car audio, I feel like I know enough to where I could give him good suggestions as far a box size and type goes. He'd get a lot more output out of a correctly sized ported box, but I'm not sure where his manufacturers specs are. Maybe I'll ask him what kind of sub he has and give him a suggestion.

This is aggravating.
I've got a close bud with a single 12 in the trunk of his Grand-Am. And for a single 12" sub, I know he's not getting all the output he could be getting. I was questioning him on his setup, and came to learn that he's running an MTX sub in a sealed box that's above the recommended specs for a ported box for this subwoofer. And instead of buying a ported box within the recommended range of the manufacturer like I suggested, he insists on getting another sub and getting a box that's almost twice as big as the one has has now.

He refuses to believe anything other than 'bigger is better' and 'sealed will give him more accuracy'. So, he's dead-set on that. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/hilarious.gif.02a037aad04aa96f19982b298a3d70a8.gif

Look up an MTX loaded hatchback box with the same or similar subwoofer to the one he has and show him how small that box is. I guarantee if he doesn't "get it" after that he needs a proper demonstration. If he's a typical guy who feels he needs to 1-up his buddies he'll be jealous once you have louder bass in your own car.
