sql subwoofers

well like Electrodynamic said......BTW he is the owner of Stereo Integrity who makes the Magnum.....if you want a great sounding sub that can get loud, go with the Magnum. If you want to be heard from a mile away, you are no longer talking about sound quality so look for SPL subs

no not really but you will find out when your shit gets jacked hah
i live in a pretty blanketed town

and if somebody stole my ****, id kno who it was

if not, get a new system, cause somebody will steal it from them

p.s. you hav to consider it as a compliment too!!! lol

I have the Id max's and love them but you just want loud so go with something else like AQ they are loud and cheap. What exactly is your budget on this?
my budget is not existant, im willing to wait longer and pay more for a better system in the end...but i want to correct u and say i want quality over volume...bottom line, im hoping i can get something thats pretty loud wit emphasis on quality

What amp are you going to be using?
watever kind would be best for the sub i would get. so i dont know yet. any suggestions?

get yourself some audioblings or some other POS loud iffy sounding sub.... PLEASE don't subject an ID max or any other credibe sub to "want to be heard from a mile away" type listening.. that would be just flat out wrong and would make baby Jesus cry //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

i wouldnt listen to them like that if i got them...im researching which one is the best for me. since i want quality, i kno i might not be able to get loudness too

i want quality...hands down

If you want sound quality hands down, first you need to take some time and determine what you really need for your vehicle. Sound quality really depends much more on the overall system than the woofer alone. Measure the transfer function of the vehicle (cabin gain) first and then you can see what you really need in terms of woofer and enclosure to work best with the vehicle. Then you can weigh the tradeoffs of various woofers, enclosure types and sizes, etc.

In terms of woofers alone look at the design and build of the woofer. What has been done to eliminate mechanical distortion, cone breakup, non-linear distortion from the motor, remove heat from the coil, etc. Here's a good overview of the Lambda motor and the steps taken to lower distortion, inductance, and power compression. http://www.aespeakers.com/Lambda001-1.php

how do i measure the transfer function in a car?

and other than that...i have no idea wat any of the other technical stuff means

no offense

No offense taken. The basics of it is to measure the transfer function is to take a sealed woofer, measure the response outside the vehicle and then again inside the vehicle. The difference is the cabin gain or transfer function of the vehicle. You can do this with measurement equipment or with test tones on a CD and a cheap SPL meter from radio shack. Speaker Workshop is free and will do what you need. http://www.speakerworkshop.com/

As far as the other stuff goes, mechanical distortion would be noise from parts moving. A surround clicking, a resonance in the cone or surround, lead wires slapping, etc. Non-linear distortion is distortion due to the woofer not acting the same on the inward stroke as on the outward. A voice coil acts like an inductor. When the coil goes inward, it is fully around the pole. In a typical woofer, as it goes outward it goes past the end of the pole. Inductance changes greatly as the "core" of the inductor is now different. This is a huge cause for distortion.

As current is applied to the coil it becomes an electromagnet itself. The magnetic field from this moving electromagnet moves around the permanent field created by the magnet. Another huge cause for distortion that most woofers don't address.

Heat causes the VC resistance to rise so you can't deliver as much power now. This is known as compression. Basically it's not able to play as loud as it needs to. A well designed woofer needs to properly remove heat to get rid of this issue.

A good woofer should do something to address all these issues to accurately reproduce the signal put into it.
