sq/spl box?

Anybody ever hear of a spl/sq box , a buddy of mine says he saw a guy that had a sub box that was sealed for everyday listening, but when he wanted to show off he had a removable wedge and a tuned port that would slide down into the box so he could db drag...is this possible? Wouldn't the airspace difference between sealed and ported specs be too different even with a port? And wouldn't it cause the sub woofer to blow very easy? If it is possible and safe that sounds freaking awsome. What are your thoughts?

been done many times, no need to removable thing, all you need a foam port plug and it converts a ported box into a sealed box. Go to svsound.com they offer that on most of their vented subwoofers.

btw, don't contuse SQ with sealed and SPL with ported, this is a big fallacy... most ported boxes are not tuned for linear response because that takes sophisticated calculations or software and possibly some EQ so most people don't get it quite right.

the other way to do a dual alignment box is with a variable mass passive radiator and a high pass filter. To make a sealed box drop all the mass on the passive and tune it to like 10Hz, it will be so low you'll never get input down there and the frequency repsonse looks identical to a sealed box... high pass filter with some EQ boost at 20 or 30Hz and you pretty much can't even measurably tell its not a sealed box.
