I'm looking for components with excellent sound quality. I could do some cutting to accept 6.5" speakers, but I'd prefer not to so I'm limited to 5.25" mids. Budget is from $100-250.

Also, should I scrap the rear fills? If it helps, the system is for a 91 MR2 so the cabin is quite small. If I do end up scrapping the rear fills, I could increase the budget for the front stage. As for the lows, I have two 8" TC1000's.

Scrap the rear fill.

As for components, look at the MB Quart PCE 213... incredible speakers, great detail, and quite loud. Feed em about 100 to 150w, and they will sing.

Also check out the Apline SPX-177R, Pioneer C720PRS, and the new Alpine SPR-17S.

Maybe the Polk MMC6500 as well. Maybe.

And yes, ditch the rears. Any front comp set up to snuff will negate the need for them anyway. Especially when the term SQ is thrown into the equation.

Big fan of Rainbow Audio Soundline SLCs. Check with 6spdcoupe for prices on SLC 265s. You should be able to get them in your budget.

Alpine's Type-X set uses Vifa's very well like XT series woofer and tweeter. The mids and highs are great, however, the woofer is not geared for midbass duty. If you want your speakers to play real low, you might consider looking elsewhere.

Pioneer's PRS set is that elsewhere. It offers strong midbass as well as a lot of detail. I would like to eventually hear a pair for myself, but reviews and comments have been outstanding.

For the $200 price range, these are simply outstanding buys.

Peerless' Definition set is a quality set with quality drivers, available in both 6" and 5" sizes, and it's priced well.

I can attest to that; I own a set.

Some of the sweetest sounding mids and highs I have ever heard without a lot of EQ tweaking. Midbass... yeah, it's not powerful or attacking by any means, but all around they are just a smooth, clean and clear sounding set of comps.

The only comp set I've personally auditioned that surpasses the X's unique type of sound reproduction are the Polk SR6500's. But those are double-triple the price (and about half more to double the midbass output; can't really give a certainty here as they were in a sound board instead of a vehicle).

Oh, and Ender.....Good suggestion on the Rainbow SLC's... lots of excellent reviews on them all over the web.

I've seen a couple sets of Aura MR5 comps floating around the classifieds. It was a little while ago, but check into it anyway.

I might agree with you if, when I auditioned them, they weren't being driven by an amp only putting out 37.5W per channel. Still with only that power, they had decent midbass and pretty clear highs. I'm just afraid that with 100-120wpc the highs might be a bit harsh with that set. Wish they had them powered appropriatly so I could give decent feedback.

why would you think that they will get harsh? a tweeter only needs like 20w to get loud. i wouldn't think 100 watts would be any different.

I think it would be worth it in the end to do slight mods, and go for 6.5s. Much better midbass response out of the same speaker.

They were in a sound board and not powered anywhere near the Polks stated rms max. I'm sure they, just like all speakers, would sound very different in a vehicle. Not just related to the amount of power feeding them, but the close-quarters acoustics of the vehicle cabin itself.

I agree with Towncar... if you can fit 6.5's in there, go for it. If not, then just about all model recommendations given thus far are also available in a 5.25" size.
