speakers of HU

I hooked my up kicker R90 tweeters up to my JVC HU and they sounded like ****. I know a lot of people are running speakers off of HU's and happy with them. They are 90 rms. THey also come with a passive inline crossover which I wire in with them. It dosn't look like much but a thin solid wire and a capacitor looking crossover in the middle. the speakers have a black and grey wire, so I figured the grey was the +. But if I amp them, will they sound much better and do I have to use the crossover too??? Some help is appreciated.
