That was the first inception of the "New" line. It was released over seas to see how it did. They were not happy with it and stopped making them. I was told the THD was a little higher than they wanted. They are working on a new design now.

 
Technically, the reference line never was cheap! The old ones were beasts though. I recall SS having major issues with the Reference S and SX series for those who ran them in high current mode. The first gen Rubicons after the Reference series were actually better built amps, but by then SS had ruined their reputation with their customer base.

Regardless, it is time for a fresh start and hopefully they continue with the tradition of overbuilding the output stage!
