Soundstream Reference 705s Replacement Amp (5-channel)

2 10" JBL subs and 4 Inifinity speakers were powered by the 705s, but a replacement is now needed. The less money, the better...

Currently looking at:

Alpine MRV-F450 (under $300 shipped is very tempting)

Kicker KX700.5 ($40 more; cooling fan will be helpful as amp is located in a warm location with little air circulation)

Phoenix Gold Octane-R 9.0:5 (also

Inifinity Reference 5761A

From the amps that you have listed I would choose the PG Octane. Nice amp, very few problems in the field from what I have read and heard. Sux about the Soundstream, those Reference series amps were strong and clean.

Yeah it's a bummer after 10 years the thing finally crapped out. Kind of weird for it to be working for 4 years in it's latest setup, then all of a sudden start blowing fuses and smoking... It's always been in a hot location with little airflow, so I guess it was bound to take its toll on the amp. My electrical engineer buddy is gonig to screw around with fixing it with me, but I can't wait for that to happen...

Thanks. I'll consider that? Viper a good brand? Also, I'm skeptical of refurbished and how long it'll last...

There is a SS Rubicon 805 selling on Ebay right now, at $300 used.

That's definitely an option... I figured it would be more cost effective just to buy a new one, though... It'd probably cost *at least* $100 in labor alone to fix it I'm assuming.
