Apple fans would like us to believe that macs have less viruses because they are a superior machine/operating system. But the sad truth is, there are less viruses out there for macs because so few people use Apple (versus Microsoft) that most hackers simply dont write Apple based viruses. If you are a hacker wanting to cause as much trouble as possible, will you write a virus that can potentially affect 99% of computers out there, or one that can potentially affect 1% of the computers?

The idea that Apple does not get viruses is merely Apple attempting to turn their small market share position into a positive via a bit of BS and misunderstanding.

newegg and tiger direct are pretty good.

if your going for mac.. man i still think theyre ridiculously overpriced for what you get.

my dad and i run a computer company, hence the signature site,

recently just set a customer up with a Lenovo laptop, i7, 8 gigs of ram, 320 meg hard drive, etc, for a grand.. se what apple can do for that much.

Asus is another great brand, they have some cool features exclusive to their laptops,

just run ubuntu linux.. no viruses. heyyooo

You could also use Linux on that same PC.....its free. Then run windows in a virtual machine such as virtualbox which is also free. The advantage is that all your software is completely free and there is some dang good software out there. For example, i record my music i play on my bass and there is a program called ardour that is just as cool as protools on windows or whatever the Mac version is. Mac's and Linux will be similar. You can also run windows apps via WINE on your linux machine. Warning...there is a learning curve to all this so if you are not patient...well...stick with Windows....

some things you can do to prevent virus' and malware is make changes to your hosts file to block known malicious sites. There are lots of files out there already to do this. Obviously keep your definitions up to date. Malware has now started to attack the hardware level, so be careful out there.

ive been pirating music online for like 10-12 years now and never picked up a virus..ever.. hopefully this dont backfire in my face lol //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif.. but why arent you running virus protection and secruity for these things if ur going to dabble in underground internet sites you have to be prepared for what comes with these sites/people posting the stuff up... try downloading a full version of a security suite of some sort and update it frequently..will help you be alot safer but not 100%.....common sense goes a long way too.

Translation: If your not comfortable spending hours learning MS-DOS type commands then stick to a GUI based OS like Windows.

I've tried Linux in the past but I just don't see the point. I've found that most linux users only use it because they hate Windows and Mac, not because they love linux.

That's because generally viruses aren't in music files. 99% if I got a virus it's because I was pirating a movie or a program (especially programs since they're already an installer, just makes it cake to put a virus in there)

your right, linux isnt exactly user friendly, odds are if your getting viruses left and right, you couldnt even handle the knowledge needed to run linux..

just run a good firewall and anitvirus..

If you are looking for a laptop I just got a HP DV7. 17.3" screen, I7 quad core, 8 gigs of ram, aluminum body, switchable grafix and 750 GB HD for $875 from Costco, so far it kicks butt.

Honestly, the best option is to use newegg/tigerdirect to pick out parts and build the PC yourself. It's not very hard to do, especially if you've installed car stereos. My first build was a little rough, but that was because I was impatient, was working with mini-ATX board+case, and one of my parts was faulty. Since I have put together about 3 PC's without a hiccup. The best part about this route is that you get a better understanding on how they are put together and you can pick better parts. Oh, and usually every individual part has its own warranty and depending on the company you will get treated much better than compared to Dell.

Macs... ugh, sometimes I have to listen to all kinds of BS from Mac owners especially being on a university campus. If you want to be that cool, trendy, smug, hippie then by all means get a Mac. They are seriously overpriced. But I will say that the MacBook Pro's have a nice build quality to them. Also, Mac's can get viruses and I have never had a problem with viruses on my PC's.

If you get Windows 7 on your new PC (which you should, its a beast of an OS) you can get Microsoft Security Essentials which is one of the better virus programs. Then there is Avast and I forget the names of a few others. Do NOT buy shit like Norton because: 1) You have to pay for it, 2) It is a virus within itself and doesn't work very well.

There are a lot of PC forums out there that can be of help. I used to spend a lot of time on the Gamefaqs PC Hardware forum, and that helped me learn most of my PC knowledge.

**I forgot to mention, if you do not build yourself, go to Newegg and just buy one of the Asus or Acer prebuilt PC's. I have had good luck with Asus products. Except, my netbook is having a video card issue which I've been too lazy to call their support. Oh, and Newegg reviews are awesome. Can't believe I'm finally seeing commercials on TV for Newegg. I have been a happy customer of theirs for years. /endshamelessNeweggplug
