Sometimes, I hate helpers.

I was doing an install and my brother decided to help, which is cool. I don't mind teaching people... so, he was in my way a bit, but it was all in good intentions... except when I went to connect one of the comp speakers to the xover, he handed me 2 wires, I didn't even check, just put them on. (Put them on as he gave them to me and said what polarity they were.) I realize after I'm done soldering... it was two negative wires... so I had to dig out the xover, and re-wire it...

Then, towards the end, he decided to hook up the amp and refused to let me do it... so I vacuumed the car... I assumed he knew to take off the negative-- he didn't. Sparks flew and he freaked out. You see, my brother's deathly afraid of catching on fire / electricity... So, after I told him to always undo the negative, he did it and then plugged in the amp. A few minutes later, someone at the shop I was working at pointed out it was in protect, then pointed out the keys weren't even in the ignition. Confused, I pulled the fuse out to see what the deal was, fuse was blown. Even more confused, I grabbed another one, and it blew instantly. As I went to take the negative off the battery my brother goes, "Oops... I think I put the negative where the positive goes..."

My hands are cut up, and I'm unhappy-- and by far the most painful cut is one going straight down the middle of my pointer finger, it's thin, reallly thin, and really deep. So it stings when I type.

How long does it take you guys to do a full install? (run the wires, hook up the comps, etc. Not including the box)

So far, I've spent two days from about 5-6 to 12 [Half the time was taking the car apart then putting it back together], then this morning from 10am-4pm.

I mean, he means well, and he's a pretty lonely guy. Most of the time he just spends with his live-in girlfriend. So, I was giving him something to do, you know? Even if it took me 2-1/2 extra hours...

me and my cousin make a good team for installs.......I think it is good to have a second person who can double check your work and give a second opinion. Sometimes solutions cannot been seen without another mind thinking about the problem

agreed. i have 1 friend who i trust to help me. im the brains of the operation (and im good with hands on shit) but he like running wire and stuff. i know when he runs wire too, all the panels and everything will get put back together correctly.

if hes not around though, my friends know to just leave me alone. if i let the rest of them help ill be missing screws, negs and pos switched up. everything will be a mess.

The car I worked on has been passed around more than a joint at Marleyfest... screws were missing, misplaced, and just a mess.

I put the car back together PROPERLY, and everyone was like, "Why you spending so much time on it? It's a piece of ish."

But, I mean, you have to start fixing it up somewhere?

****, I feel you. I would have been frustrated as well.

This past summer I told my buddy that I would install his new equipment. Basic work, amp with a pair of subs. We worked in his driveway instead of the garage because it was a beautiful day. Big mistake. After about 10 minutes in, there was literally an entourage standing by his car just watching me install the stuff, watching EVERY move. I don't mind, they would ask "what does that do? Where does that go?" and I would explain briefly the concepts of it.

One of my other friends who also does car audio insisted to expedite the process. So, he asked if he could run and wire the power from the battery. I said "No problem", because he did his car a month or two earlier so I assumed he knew what he was doing. While I was running the RCA's from the HU and up along the side under the kicks I hear him say "Oh sh*t!" So I go around to the trunk and he said "Uhhh, I'm about a foot short on power wire"

He cut the power wire a good 16" short of where I mounted the amp (In this hideaway in the car). I was like what do I do now? Because we didn't have enough power wire to redo it, and I was leaving for vacation that very night, so I wanted to have my buddy have his car with the install done before I left.

Edit: Also, another one was when I left for school. Since I was going away for over 2 months my uncle insisted to start my car up after about 6 weeks just to "Warm it up". Well, it didn't start, so he bought a new battery and replaced it for me. When he called and said "I replaced your battery upfront!" I thought it was great. When I got home I went to check it out, and my jaw dropped. Apparently he couldn't get the old one out so he pried it out I guess. He CUT the power wire from my amp to the Batt positive, including the fuse. So from the fuse up to the battery was totally gone.

I asked who cut it off and he said that he had to because it wouldn't come off (he didn't use a socket set to take it off lol so he just sliced it) and he said he was stumped on what the fuse and fuse holder was there for in the first place (he didn't know I had equipment in the car). //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

Me and fusion_FREAK did an install together last year on an F150, we made a good team. Didn't really get in each other's way.

Been when it comes to my car, I fly solo.

Usually I don't mind when people watch me, but I do my best work alone. When I have people around me when I'm working, especially more than 1, I get distracted.
