How 'bout a B&K for validity. I didn't know anything about these things, but I went to out of town today and thought I would swing by this place called "Custom Sound Works." When I called, a guy named "Mike" answered and we talked for a bit about me coming by. Well little did I know that Mike Jones holds something like 67 sound records and we got along great because he knew some people I knew in the scene too. I also knew nothing of these meters and he said he is one of three people outside NASA that has one. He also said they are very expensive to buy and not too cheap just to calibrate.

Well short story long, here it is. My ears do still hear pretty accurately after all these years. I thought it was pretty impressive, and Mike had told me that on a TL it would hit 1.8 higher due to how he has his B&K set up. The pic is of Mike holding the meter sitting in my car.

Thanks a lot Mike!

I've seen/heard the B&K's read lower than the termlabs, but the opposite can be said as well.

The thing I keep trying to get across to people is that the termlab is NOT necessarily the most accurate, BUT it IS the most consistent across the board. Which makes it much easier to compare scores and thus is the "trusted" meter.

Either way though, the B&K is still a good meter.

I don't know much about specifics, but I just wanted to get my #s and see. I know the TL is most consistent and that is what we were going to use, but the software wouldn't work. I'm not going to get into an argument about semantics with anyone. All I know is what I was told.

And when I said expesive about the cost of this thing, he said that they cost $16K and $2-3K just for the calibration.

Bottom line, 2 SQ subs get fvckin loud. Realm Audio FTW!

but wouldn't something that is more accurate be more consistent by default?
not necessarily.

By accurate I mean reads closest to what the actual dB level is. The B&K is probably just as accurate as the TL, but the B&K can be affected more by temperature, air pressure, etc.

Plus different B&K's will read differently from each other, moreso than a termlab will.

The most I've seen two termlabs read differently from each other is ~.2 dB. That can't be said for any other meter, imo.

Thats what I meant by consistency. It's consistency within the meter itself and between different meters.
